Three Journals eBook Greg Masters Reviews

It needs great courage to write honestly about your life journey and i must say that Greg did it with utmost affirmation.
A delightful read indeed.
Clear, honest, funny. I was charmed by the author's recollections of his friends & adventures. This is what a journal should be.
The author and his tales widen the mind and touch the soul. Morocco, The East Village, Mexico... true reality for what makes travel so rewarding. Brilliant author, kind hearted and modest. I loved reading it!
Within Three Journals, by Greg Master, lies a time that most of us went through, one way or the other. The post college adventure, the coming or age adventure. Stepping into the world, that had only lived in books until now. Furtive steps towards the possibility of dreams becoming manifest. Within these pages are reflected dreams, promises, we all shared. So here is a chance to step again into that moment, a time that has passed, but no reason not to remember all that it was for us.
Three Journals is a literary masterpiece in the nonfiction genre. The vivid portrayal of the author's travels would leave any reader with the desire to get on a plane right away and head to the destinations mentioned in the book. I loved reading the stories and look forward to seeing more from this author. Highly recommended to anyone!
Three Journals is a gorgeously produced and edited book. Greg Masters gives us a thoroughly enjoyable account of journeys he made during different periods of his life. Masters brings to his writing a relaxed and engaging style that reveals his inner thoughts and feelings set in the context of the 1970s and 1980s. He invites us to journey with him as he explores not only parts of the world, but his budding career as a writer and artist.

The first journal recounts the joys and travails of a young man recently out of school as he hitchhikes from Wales to Morocco. In Ireland, he rhapsodizes about James Joyce, the modern writer who set the bar too high for aspiring writers. Masters laments the small chance he has of equaling surpassing Joyce, but Masters reveals his own gift for inner monologue using a new voice for our times. This journal is, indeed, a portrait of the artist as a young man.

The second journal is set some 3 years later and describes Masters as a serious writer in the East Village in Manhattan, supporting himself by working in a bookstore in a pre- age. Although the East Village episode is not strictly a journey (Masters lives today in the same apartment), the month and a half chronicled here represents an important stage in the writer’s development as he struggles to produce the poetry magazine Mag City and to maintain enough energy to spend his evenings writing. This journal shows a more disciplined and mature writing style with more extended passages that recount the everyday events of Masters’ life in the East Village as a perpetually fascinating travelogue.

The final journal is a description of a trip through Mexico in 1985. Masters speaks little Spanish and is an awkward American abroad during the Reagan era, but he makes his way across the country on a series of local buses and borrowed rides. The mature Masters continues to be fascinated with local culture and with his new connections with the other travelers and locals he meets along the way. The inner monolog is seasoned with excerpts from letters to friends, giving us a rich description of the artist and his response to travel, reminiscent of the skillful writing of Paul Theroux.

Three Journals is a masterpiece and a wonderful introduction to Masters’ writing. It includes the promise of a forthcoming book of stories written during the same time period, a promise that can’t be fulfilled soon enough for this reader.
